Common questions about full-size dishwashers
A full-size dishwasher represents the perfect balance of capacity, performance, and convenience for modern households. Measuring 60cm wide and typically 85cm tall, these appliances offer substantial space for families and busy kitchens, handling between 12 to 16 place settings in a single cycle. This impressive capacity means you can wash anywhere from 120 to 173 items simultaneously, making them ideal for households that frequently cook elaborate meals or entertain guests.
Full-size (60cm) models are the default choice for most UK kitchens. They suit families of four or more, homes that run the dishwasher daily, and anyone who regularly washes large pots, baking trays, or dinner-party place settings. If your kitchen has a standard under-counter gap and you want maximum flexibility for loading, a full-size machine delivers more rack space and programme options than a compact alternative.
The beauty of full-size dishwashers lies in their remarkable efficiency and hygiene benefits. Modern units use surprisingly little water – typically just 9-12 litres per cycle compared to the 27 gallons often consumed when washing the same amount of dishes by hand. These machines can reach temperatures of 60-80°C, far hotter than human hands can tolerate, ensuring superior sanitisation and removing 99.999% of bacteria. This high-temperature washing, combined with powerful spray arms and specialised detergents, delivers spotless results that hand washing simply cannot match.
Beyond their exceptional cleaning performance, full-size dishwashers offer incredible time-saving convenience. Loading takes just 9 minutes compared to up to 60 minutes of hand washing, freeing up valuable time for other activities. The automated process means you can start a cycle and walk away, with many models offering delayed start timers and eco-friendly programmes that optimise water and energy consumption. Modern dishwashers also feature adjustable racks, fold-down tines, and third-tier cutlery trays that maximise loading flexibility for everything from delicate glassware to large casserole dishes.
Full-size dishwashers come in two main installation styles: freestanding models that can be placed anywhere with proper connections, and integrated versions that seamlessly blend behind kitchen cabinet doors for a streamlined aesthetic. Both options offer the same powerful cleaning capabilities while accommodating different kitchen designs and personal preferences. A full-size dishwasher is the better fit when you have a standard 60cm space and regularly fill large loads. Slimline dishwashers (around 45cm wide) suit compact kitchens and smaller households, but cannot match the capacity of a full-size unit for big families or frequent entertaining. If you are unsure, measure your available width first — then filter by size on this page.
For environmentally conscious households, full-size models can still be a surprisingly sustainable choice. Energy-efficient units use up to 74% less water than hand washing and significantly reduce electricity consumption through optimised heating systems. Many feature eco-modes that further reduce resource usage while maintaining excellent cleaning performance, making them kind to both your wallet and the environment.
